The last word to Mrs Das
Mrs. Das was a resident of Salt Lake sector 5 area. She was working in a B.P.O. in Rajarhat Newtown. She was a widow and had no any relatives or children. She always came back her home late at night where she lived as a paying guest. In her gesture she was a large woman.

Just like other usual days, one day she was coming home very late at night. She had a Big purse in her hand the purse had everything in it but hammer and nails. It had a long strap and she carried it slang across her shoulder. It was about 11 o'clock at night and she was walking alone when a boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse. The strap broke with a single tug the boy gave it from behind. But the boy's weight and the weight of the purse combined caused him to loss his balance so, instead of taking off full blast as he had hoped, the boy fell on his back on the sidewalk and his legs flew up. Mrs. Das turned and kicked him right square in his blue jeaned sitter. Then Mrs. Das reached down, picked the boy up by his shirt front, and shook him until his teeth rattled.
After that Mrs. Das said '' pick up my purse and give it to me''. She still held him and under the capture her and the boy was unable to do anything.

''Are not you ashamed of yourself ?'' Mrs. Das asked the boy.
Firmly gripped by his shirt front, the boy said ,''Yes Ma'am''.
''Then why you are doing so?'' Mrs. Das said to the boy angrily.
The boy replied ,''For nothing ma'am.''
''Don't tell me lie'' by saying these words, Mrs. Das shook him again.
There were very few people on the road at that time. Only two or three people passed, stopped, turned to look ,and some stood watching.
''If I turn you loose, will you run?'' asked Mrs. Das.
''Yes ma'am'' said the boy.
''Then I won't turn you loose,'' said Mrs. Das. She did not release him.
The boy was trying to achieve Mrs. Das's pardon by saying ,''I'am sorry madam, very very sorry.''
Mrs. Das thought a little and then she said,'' I can not release you as your face is very dirty. I have got a great idea in that occasion.'' Then she started dragging the boy and the boy became very frightened. He was totally confused by her behaviour.

'' Is there nobody at your home to tell you to wash your face? asked Mrs. Das.
The boy replied,'' No ma'am there is nobody in my home.''
Mrs. Das was continuing her dragging the frightened boy behind her. By the time of dragging she looked at the boy several times. He looked as if he were fourteen or fifteen, tall and thin and graceful also. He was in tennis shoes and blue jeans. After a few moments Mrs. Das said ,''You ought to be my son. I would teach you right from wrong. Least I can do right now is to wash your face. are you hungry?''
''No ma'am'' said the boy '' I just want you to turn me loose.''
"My dear, am I bothering you?'' asked Mrs. Das.
The dragging boy replied ,''No ma'am''.

''Listen son,'' said Mrs. Das ,''if you are thinking to escape from myself, remember my name is Nilima Das, a former athlete.''
The boy was now sweating badly and he had no idea what was going on. After a few minutes they reached in front of a five storied flat. Mrs. Das was still continuing to drag. When she got to her door ,she dragged the boy inside the room. It was a fair large room and well furnished. There was only a bed, a table and a chair ,a television set and other furnitures. She switched on the light and left the door open. The boy could hear other roomers laughing and talking in the other rooms. Some of their doors were open too. Mrs Das still had the boy by the neck in the middle of her room.
Finally she asked the name of the boy. The boy replied ''Tuhin''.
''It is a nice name. However Tuhin go to that sink and wash your face'' said Mrs. Das. After that she turned him loose at last. Now Tuhin looked at the door and then looked at Mrs. Das, and finally he went to the sink. ''Wash your face and hands properly and carefully, there is a towel also.'' Mrs. Das added.

Tuhin now became comfortable with the atmosphere. Then he asked Mrs. Das ,''Do you want to call the police?''
Mrs. Das laughing and then said ,''No , not with that face, I would take you nowhere.''
They both remain silent for a few moments. After that Mrs. Das said,'' I think you are hungry, so please wait a few minutes till I complete my cooking''. Mrs. Das went to the kitchen. Then Tuhin him thought what was happening. The door was open, he could make a dash for it down the hall; he could run but he did not.
After a while she returned from the kitchen and served the food on the table. There was some rice and egg curry. Then she asked him to join her in the table. Tuhin hesitantly seated in a chair and started eating. Mrs. Das asked him if he liked the egg curry .
Tuhin replied that he liked that. Then Mrs. Das asked him why did he snatched her purse. The boy replied that he wanted to buy a pair of blue shoes. Then she said,'' you don't have to snatch My Pocket book to get that . Look son , I am a hard working woman. I work 10 to 12 hours per day in a BPO centre. I had also a younghood. I had also huge desire, but I never snatched peoples pocketbooks.''
Within ten minutes the dinner was finished. Mrs. Das again returned to the kitchen. Tuhin was alone in the room. There was no one, he could easily escaped from the room but he did not. The woman did not watch him nor the purse which was left behind in the day bed. But the boy took care to sit on the far side of the room where he thought she could easily see him. He did not trust the woman not to trust him and he did not want to be mistrusted now .After a few minutes, she returned from the kitchen with two bowls of Kheer. She offered Tuhin a bowl and the other was for her. They started with the Kheer.

Mrs. Das did not ask the boy anything about where he lived, or his folks , or anything else that would embarrass him . Instead, as they ate, she told him about her job in a BPO Call Centre that stayed open late; what the work was like; what kind of customers she had to deal with etc. Suddenly Mrs. Das noticed the bowl of Tuhin emptied . She said,'' Eat some more son, I fetch some more.'' Tuhin prohibited her and said ,''No ma'am it's ok, I don't need more.''
When they were finished the kheer Mrs. Das got up and went towards her purse. From the purse she took some money and returned to Tuhin and said,' 'Now, here, take this one thousand rupees and buy whatever you want. And next time do not make the mistake of latching onto my purse, nor nobody else's- because things come by devilish like that will burn your soul. I have to get my rest now. But I wish you would always remember my words.''

She accompanied Tuhin to the front door and opened it. Then she said ,'' Goodnight! And remember my words.'' At that exact moment Mrs Das was looking out into the street, she was not looking at Tuhin. Tuhin could easily notice the tears from Mrs. Das's eyes.
Tuhin wanted to say something. But he could not do so as the door was banged in front of him. He never saw the woman again and he never said his last words '' Thank you ma'am'' to Mrs. Das.
