What is informal education? Discuss the features of informal education.

Definition and characteristics of informal education.

Concept / definition of informal education:-

Informal education refers to the lack of control over the various elements of education. The four main means of modern education are - students, teachers, curriculum and schools. In informal education, no one - institution, individual and state - directly controls these four elements of education. That is, informal education is the type of education that can be organized in individual life without any control.

Educationist Coombs said that whatever education a person acquires without control is informal education.

Characteristics / features of informal education:-

The features of informal education are -

1. Uncontrollability:-
The main characteristic of informal education is uncontrollability. Here the student learns from his environment, society, institutions, etc. in an uncontrolled manner. Even, there is no control over what the student learns and his evaluation, etc.

2. Lifelong process: -
Formal education is organized up to a certain age limit. But informal education is a lifelong process. People learn from their environment and society from birth to death and develop intellectually through that experience.

3. Absence of curriculum: -
In informal education, the presence of any specific curriculum cannot be observed. In this case, everything in the society and environment of a person is a part of his curriculum. In this case, people can select subjects according to their needs and demands.

4. No need for a teacher: -
In informal education, the presence of a teacher is unnecessary. Here people learn by themselves and play the role of a teacher themselves. Generally, family, media, group of friends, various institutions, nature, etc. are the main means of informal education.

5. Unplanned:-
In informal education , nothing is pre-planned or well-thought-out. Here, people learn from society and their environment. Therefore, there is no room for pre-planning in informal education. People learn instantly according to their needs.

6. Absence of textbooks:-
Since there is no curriculum in informal education, the presence of a specific textbook is also not observed. People select textbooks here according to their needs.

7. Absence of evaluation and testing:-
In informal education, the presence of any institutional tests and evaluation is not observed. People use their experiences to develop themselves and increase their excellence.

8. Absence of specific educational levels:-
In formal education, there are specific educational levels. A student passes from one class to another. But in informal education, the presence of such educational levels is not observed. In this case, the student can independently acquire knowledge in any subject according to his needs.

9. Freedom:-
Informal education is almost free. Here the student gets education according to his/her own ability and needs. The student enjoys complete freedom in all areas like subject selection, learning, education planning, setting educational goals, etc.

10. Absence of artificiality :-
Informal education is natural education without artificiality. Unlike formal education, nothing is artificially imposed on the student here. In informal education , students get education independently and naturally according to their needs.
