Features / Characteristics of justice:-
The English synonym of the word justice is derived from the Latin word 'Jus'. Professor Barker has discussed justice in detail in his book Principles of Social and Political Theory. Barker is of the opinion that everyone has the idea of justice and everyone is more or less aware of the correct nature of justice. Justice is not an imaginary concept or ideal; it is an ultimate reality. The characteristics of justice are -
1. Morality:-
Although justice and morality are not the same thing, there is a relationship between them. Every person in society is socially related to each other. Justice controls the social and external life of man. External justice is established on the internal morality of man. Thus, the manifestation of morality is justice and it controls the external behavior of human.
2. Coordinating bond:-
Human life witnesses various ideals; such as - freedom, fraternity, friendship, cooperation, equality - etc. Justice harmonizes these great ideals with human life. Therefore, justice is a bond of human with all the great social ideals.
3. Concept of balance:-
Professor Barker also considers justice as the bearer of balance. When there is a conflict between different social ideals, justice maintains balance between them. If justice fails in the social process, conflict and chaos are created in the social field. Therefore, justice maintains a balance between social ideals and makes them socially useful.
4. Social relations:-
Justice creates an environment of mutual relations, cordiality, and harmony among the individuals in the society. All societies talk about social peace and establishment. Justice makes this task easy. Again, to indirectly fulfill this goal, justice is established in society.
5. Establishment of social rights:-
Justice preserves the social and political rights of people. If for some reason the social rights of individuals in society are violated, people can obtain their social rights through justice. Therefore, there is a close relationship between justice and social rights of people.
6. Establishment of rationality:-
Justice plays an important role in establishing rationality in society. If justice is established in society, people can be aware of their rights and duties. As a result, they can judge every issue and problem in terms of logic.
7. Helpful in personality development:-
Justice is a holistic concept through which a clear idea can be obtained about how an individual should behave. If judged from this perspective, justice can also be called a controller of personality. Justice guides the behavior of individuals in society.
8. Sense of duty:-
The relationship between sense of duty and justice is very close. Commenting on this issue, the philosopher Plato said - there is a connection between justice and the duty of every person. Every person in society is entitled to perform duties according to his own position and dignity. Justice is established through the performance of this duty.
9. Establishment of social justice:-
Justice is established in society through justice. When individuals in society are victims of any injustice or exploitation; then only through justice can the justice of society be preserved. The absence of justice in society will fill the society with chaos.
10. Establishment of values:-
Social life requires the establishment of complete values. The great ideals of freedom, equality, friendship, brotherhood, etc. are hidden in these values. It is possible to establish these great ideals by establishing justice in society.
11. End of class struggle:-
If justice is fully established in society, class struggle will disappear. Class struggle arises between the privileged and the disadvantaged classes. If justice is established in society, the gap between the privileged and the disadvantaged classes will be eliminated. As a result, the possibility of class struggle will naturally be eliminated.
Finally, it can be said that justice is the foundation of establishing rights, peace, brotherhood, equality, freedom, etc. in society. It is through justice that the great ideals of society are preserved and transmitted. Justice maintains balance at all levels of society.
