Concept and definition of formal education / controlled education:-


Among the various forms of education, formal or controlled education is the most accepted and scientific system. In a word, traditional education or institutional education is called formal education. All the elements of formal education are well-controlled. In this type of system, teachers, students, curriculum and school - all the elements are managed in a well-controlled way. The age of the student, curriculum, teaching method, examination and evaluation - everything is pre-planned. The responsibilities and duties of the teacher are also pre-determined.

According to the Oxford dictionary, formal education is one in which every major and minor element of education is controlled and these controlling authorities are arranged in a hierarchical manner.

Features of Formal Education:-


The features of formal education are -

1. School:-
Formal education is conducted in specific schools. There are different types of schools in the society for different types of education. For example, primary school, secondary school - etc. Formal education provided in any other way than school is not recognized.

2. Teacher:-

The English word curriculum comes from the Latin word Currere; which means to run. Again, the etymological meaning of the word Curriculum is the path of running to reach a specific goal. According to some prominent educationalists, curriculum:-

Payne said - Whatever programs are taken in school for the maximum personal and social development of the student, that is the curriculum.

Cunningham said - Curriculum is a tool for developing the student in the school environment focusing on specific goals and objectives.

Percy Nunn said - Educational ideals are reflected in school life through curriculum.

John Dewey said - Curriculum is the coherent form of everything that the student learns through school.

Froebel said - Curriculum is a short version of the overall knowledge of human civilization.

The Secondary Education Commission in its report on curriculum said - Curriculum is not only education through textbooks; along with it, the overall environment of the school, the environment outside the school and the society, etc., with all the elements, controlled and uncontrolled, is the curriculum.

Analyzing the above definitions, it can be said that - Curriculum is -
(a) Subjects taught in school,
(b) Collection of multiple subjects,
(c) Collection of some elements and materials,
(d) Planned by the school,
(e) Controlled by the school and the teacher,

The different features of co-curricular activities are -

Co-curricular activities help in the development of the vocational consciousness of the student. The importance of work, learning to work in a team, not looking down on any work - etc. ideals are directly or indirectly transmitted to the students through co-curricular activities.

12. Development of Discipline: -
The success of co-curricular activities held in the school depends on discipline. Students are given appropriate education in discipline while conducting co-curricular activities. Developing a sense of discipline among the students is one of the objectives of co-curricular activities.

13. Development of Creativity: -
Students are given the opportunity to develop their creativity through co-curricular activities in the school. Creativity is developed among the students through co-curricular activities such as school magazines, wall magazines, music, dance, drawing, practical training.

14. Cognitive Development: -
Promoting the cognitive development of the students is also one of the objectives of co-curricular activities. Some special co-curricular activities held in schools help in the cognitive development of students. For example - quiz contest, debate, recitation - etc.

15. Formation of positive and constructive attitude: -
The diversity of co-curricular activities, cultural - creative and social aspects give rise to positive and constructive attitude among students. As a result, the student can spread that constructive ideal in his own life and in the known society.

16. Development of healthy culture:-
Properly conducted co-curricular activities help in the development of healthy culture among students. Co-curricular activities keep students away from anti-culture, disorder, lack of ideals - etc. Through co-curricular activities, students can experience the ideal standard of culture.

Other objectives of co-curricular activities are -
(a) Providing opportunities for students to express themselves.
(b) Increasing cooperative spirit among students.
(c) Accelerating the intellectual development of students.
(d) Building ideal character of students - etc.

Different types of co-curricular activities.

1. Physical activities:-
Physical activities in schools have two main objectives - (a) to make students aware of physical exercise and its benefits, and (b) to encourage students to participate in physical activities. For the purpose of conducting physical activities in schools, various sports (football, cricket, volleyball, kabaddi - etc.), yoga - etc. are organized. By participating in these physical activities, students develop positive ideas such as participation in team work, cooperative spirit, competitive mentality, discipline - etc.

2. Social Activities:-
Some co-curricular activities are conducted in schools through which students develop social awareness, socialization and social interaction, a spirit of cooperation, etc. Notable among these activities are - organizing blood donation camps, awareness camps about various diseases, collecting relief for people affected by natural disasters, etc.

3. Environmental Activities:-
It is the duty of every student to be aware of the environment and to dedicate oneself to the welfare of the environment. Therefore, special importance is given to the environment in conducting co-curricular activities along with the curriculum in schools. Notable among the co-curricular activities related to the environment are - conducting tree plantation programs, school cleanliness drives, keeping the classrooms clean, conducting plastic elimination programs, etc.

4. Literacy Programs:-
It is an essential duty of the state and the individual to make every person in the society literate. Through literacy programs, students are encouraged to bring the light of education to every person in the society. Making illiterate people in the local area aware of education, bringing children who are outside the school circle to the school - all these activities are assigned to the students.

5. Cooperative Programs: -
Various co-curricular activities are held in the school to develop a spirit of cooperation among the students. Notable among these activities are - various social service activities, keeping the school clean, various cultural programs, sports - etc. To make these activities successful, it is mandatory for students to have a cooperative relationship with each other. Students behave cooperatively to make all these activities successful.

6. Intellectual and Cognitive Activities: -
Along with the curriculum, co-curricular activities also help in the intellectual and cognitive development of the student. Notable among these educational activities are - organizing debates, quiz competitions, essay competitions, organizing discussion meetings on various topics - etc.

7. Creative activities: -
Creativity exists in every student. To encourage the creativity of students, various co-curricular activities are organized in schools. For example - school magazines, wall magazines, various types of handicrafts and work education, science exhibitions - etc.

8. Expressive activities: -
Some latent talent is hidden in every student. Students are given the opportunity to express themselves through various co-curricular activities. Notable among these expressive activities are - dance and music, acting, NCC, NSS, science exhibitions, handicraft exhibitions, various sports - etc.

9. Cultural activities: -
Education is the bearer and carrier of culture. Therefore, various programs are organized for cultural transmission among students. Notable among these cultural activities are - celebrating the foundation day of the school, celebrating the birthdays of various intellectuals, celebrating various national and international days, various cultural programs - etc.

10. Autonomous activities: -
The autonomous activities of students in the school mean - all the activities that the students themselves manage. Notable among these activities are - running various cooperative societies of the school, running the hostel, running various programs imposed by the school - etc.

11. Programs related to the elimination of superstitions: -
Superstitions are a curse of life. One of the main objectives of education is to build a superstitions free society. Therefore, it is necessary to form a superstition-free mentality in every student. For this purpose, various programs are organized in the school. For example - organizing awareness camps on all the issues on which various superstitions are prevalent in the society; such as - what to do if bitten by a dog, what to do in case of a patient who is possessed by a ghost - etc.

12. Activities related to the use of science and technology: -
In modern life, science and technology are closely related to human life. Therefore, every student is tried to be scientifically minded and the proper use of technology is taught. The co-curricular activities that are conducted in this regard are - computer classes in schools, reading through overhead projectors, use of the internet - etc.
