Hi! I am a book that was written by J.K. Rowling, you know the famous author who created the famous Harry Potter series and became a billionaire.
My name is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I am a really exciting book about wizards and witches, magic and spells, and of course He Who Must Not Be Named. After J.K. Rowling wrote me, I was sent to Bloomsbury Publishers. Editors there read me, loved me and I was sent for publication.

After they made millions of copies of me, I was shipped to bookshops around the world. I was a hardcover edition with a glistening cover and beautiful illustrations. There I stood on the shelves, gleaming under the spotlights waiting, for book lovers to come and buy me.
One day, a very rude, boisterous boy visited a bookshop and that, my friends, was the end of my good days. He flipped through my pages with dirty, gummy fingers and ripped few of my pages. I was horrified at his callous attitude. The shop keeper forced the boy’s mother to buy me, because no one would now buy a torn book.

As soon as I got to my new home, I was put aside carelessly. To my horror, a toddler crawled towards me, attracted by my red, shiny cover. Worse still, she was holding a sipping cup, half full of orange juice. First, she clutched me with wet fingers, and then she drooled all over me. To make matters worse, she spilled some juice on me, making me all wet and soggy. She even tried to chew a corner of my cover till her mother rescued me.
To my relief, I was left alone for some time until someone roller skated over me. Wizz! Ouch! I whimpered. It was that wretched boy again who zigzagged around me without a care in the world.
At bedtime, he decided to read me… while eating a chocolate cake. Now I was done for. He read a few pages, and used his fat, podgy finger to wipe chocolate cream off my pages. He got bored after reading just a few pages (imagine that) and flung me across the room. To my utter dismay, I landed in the laundry basket overflowing with his dirty, smelly clothes.

Next morning, the maid carried me off to somewhere. I couldn’t see anything because I was smothered by clothes. She tipped the whole basket over and I was in the washing machine, I was whirled and got tumbled about for an eternity. When the boy’s mother saw my tattered remains, she fished me out of soapy water and threw me aside in disgust. A crow sat on me and well… I never smelt the same again.
After I dried out, I was put alongside old newspapers and other books that seem to have gone through the same torture as myself. Clearly this was a household that had no love for books… not that I can be called a book any longer. In just under two days, I had been torn, ripped, drooled on, smeared with cake, flung about mercilessly and washed in a washing machine. Now I will be sold with old rubbish and maybe recycled.

And now I end my sad, little story with a request. Remember, friends, books are man’s best friends. You gain knowledge and learn about different cultures by reading books. You can visit and travel to far off places through books without leaving your home. Reading books helps you to communicate better and develop new ideas so take good care of us. Surely we deserve it!

Autobiography of a One Rupee Coin

I am a one Rupee Coin and I am writing my autobiography. I was born in a mint in Delhi many years ago. I was brand new then and shone like a star; on my face was impressed the effigy of the King and on my other side I was stamped with my value. I was then thrown into a big sack with lots of others like me. Then, one day, I was sent off with my friends to bank. I lay there in an old iron box for many days, and then was handed over to fat man along with some currency notes.
One day my master gave me to a shopkeeper in exchange for a packet he bought, and I was dropped into a drawer, from where I could see hundred of things displayed on the shelves. I was just getting used to my surroundings when someone pushed me into his pocket. I soon discovered, to my horror, that the pocket had a hole, and before lang I found myself lying in a dirty street covered with mud. To crown it all, people stepped all over me with big, heavy boots. I cried out in pain and oh! Dear, this was not the idea of fun at all.
Thank goodness a little boy spotted me and his eyes lit up like lamps when he held and examined me. I knew I had made him happy. Just that thought wiped away all my earlier pain and discomfort. In a strange way I realized I was needed, so I stayed on with the little boy who dropped me into his bank.

Autobiography of a Coin

I am very old coin and have been in circulation of many years. When I was issued from the mint, I was very bright and fresh. My active life began when I fell into the hands of a gentleman along with other new coins from the counter of a bank. We all were very happy and caressing each other in the purse of the gentleman.
But I was not there for a long time. I was given to a poor barber and he kept me in his box with many other coins. The barber was a great lover of beauty. So he was greatly attracted by my beauty. He often looked at me and fondled me. I stayed with him for a long time. But then came a time when he was forced to give me to a shopkeeper to buy some rice. I was also very much hurt to be separated from the man who loved me so dearly.
Then a customer got me from the shop and on his way home, I was dropped from his hand. Nobody saw me there and I was trodden by many pedestrians. Ultimately a beggar found me to his great pleasure. He was very hungry. So, very soon he gave me to a shop to get his food.
Thus, I have been changing places and persons for a fairly long time. I am now very old and have lost my shine and brightness considerably. The lettering and the Lion’s head have much faded. But I have not yet lost my value.

I am river Mahananda. I was born a long time ago in an ambiguous region in a mountain. I am combination of several streams. From the day I was born I was restless to move on and travel to unknown regions. Thus, I was bubbling with life and vigour, ready to overcome any obstacle that came my way. I ferociously scurry through the narrow creeks and bends in the mountains to begin my journey into unknown lands. I really feel very strong, invincible and pure at this point as I move along a rough terrain with strong undercurrents. Sometimes I plunge several hundreds of feet from a great height with great force. This is known as a waterfall. As I progress on a downward trend carrying along broken rocks and debris, I finally reach the plains.

At this juncture of my course, I find myself in the upper plains and observe my course widening. The water that I bring down here from the mountains is made good use of by people settled in the area. It is quite interesting to see a good number of settlements on my banks. People make feel very important since they feel I am sacred, holy and a source of life. Along with small townships, houses there are temples as well. The scenic beauty around me is very beautiful and amazing. From the rough mountain terrain, I tend to become a bit slow and slurry in the upper plains. I am the only source of pure and clean water and I feel great that I am useful to so many people. As I move along, I collect a lot of soil, rocks and debris and become heavy. Thus I lose on speed and slowly trudge along the plains.

Leaving the upper plains behind I reach the lower plains. The soil that I carry along with me is very fertile and extremely good for agriculture. I flood the plains with fertile alluvial soil that increases the fertility and yield of fields located on my banks. Several farmers are dependent on me for their livelihood and occupation. I water the fields, which in turn helps crops to grow in abundance here. This makes the region prosper and fosters economic growth. There is always some hustle and bustle to be seen here and the scenery is very beautiful and enriching.

As I move across the plains, I considerably slow down and begin to take wide turns and bends. Several townships have developed along my banks, which have commercial and economic importance. These townships have a varied culture as well. I have become a platform for trade and commerce. People carry goods to and fro across the river for trade. My water is also used for bathing, household chores and for drinking as well.

Sometimes during my course in the mountains and plains, especially in the monsoon seasons I carry overwhelming volumes of water that causes floods. To control the volume of water I carry, people have built dams. I move with great fury and force during this time, and sometimes even cause a good amount of damage to civilization. Dams have been built to store excess water, which is to be used for agricultural purposes during the dry season. In the upper course of my journey, i.e. in the mountains, the government has developed several hydel power projects to generate electricity. The electricity that is generated here helps industry to grow and also helps the people living in the area in the occupation and trade.

In this manner I continue moving along with no end until I meet the sea. In the lower course of the river, I play the role of the creator and destroyer. Several homes and houses have been washed away by me during the floods; but at the same time I am also a source of new life, especially agriculture. I deposit fertile soil in the plains that helps crops to grow, which would enhance economic growth of the country.

My goal is to continue flowing till I meet the sea. This is the last phase of my journey. Here people have built ports and factories. This brings about a certain amount of pollution and impurities. In the upper course my water is pure without any impurities; but in the last phase of my journey I am unable to retain my purity on account human activity. Thus my journey is actually never comes to an end. I continue to flow eternally with an aim to be at the service of mankind for generations to come.
