Summary of A letter to God

A letter to God : G.L. Fuentes

Summary of the story: -

In this story we find Lencho as the central character. The story is not just about Lencho’s unwavering faith in God. At the same time, the conventional social human behaviour , people's belief in human beings - all these have also been mentioned. The end of the story is truly ironic . Despite his deep faith in God, Lencho has forgotten that humanity still exists. In today's society we are no exception.

Lencho is a farmer and he lives with his family on the crest of a low hill. The grain field below from his house looks very beautiful. The crops were planted, and the cornfields were in bloom. Lencho had hoped for a very good harvest this year. So Lencho was expecting a good rain. To him, every drop of rain was as precious as money.

However, one day it rained. Lencho was very happy. But his happiness did not last long. Soon strong winds began to blow and then hail began to fall. The effects of the hailstorm were so severe that all crops in the field were destroyed. Not a single flower or leaf of the plants remained. Lencho felt as if someone had covered his corn field with salt.

Lencho had nothing else to do. His crop fields are completely destroyed. Lencho thinks he and his family have to stay hungry for this year. But Lencho had a deep faith in God. He believed that only God could help him in this situation.

So the next Sunday he began to write a letter to God. He reported his current condition and prayed to God for one hundred pesos to sow again and survive till the next harvest.

Lencho wrote the address ‘’ to God ‘’  and dropped the letter in the post box. While collecting the letter from the post box, a post office employee received the letter written by Lencho. He was very surprised to see the address of the recipient in the letter and smiled. He then shows the letter to the postmaster. The postmaster was also surprised to see that address and started laughing. However, the postmaster soon became very serious. He decided that the letter writer's faith in God needed to be maintained. So he decides to help Lencho. But it was not possible for him to raise 100 pesos alone. So he collected money from his colleagues in the name of charity and put the money in an envelope.

The following Sunday, Lencho went to the post office again and asked if there was a letter in his name. The post office employee then brought the envelope had kept for Lencho. Lencho was so faithful to God that he felt it was natural for him to reply to a letter from God. He opened the letter and saw the money. He is very happy. But when he starts counting the money, he gets angry. Soon after, he wrote another letter to God and dropped it in the post box. After Lencho left the post office, the post office employee immediately took the letter to the postmaster. The postmaster began to read the letter with interest. This time the letter stated that Lencho had thanked God for his grace and at the same time stated that he had not received the full amount of his request. He knows that God sent the full amount in the first time. So Lencho again requested God for 30 pesos and also requested that this time God should not send money by mail; because, in the first time 30 pesos may be embezzled by the employees of this post office.
