Indira Gandhi Awas Yojana ( IAY ) : Objectives and Impact.
This scheme has been adopted mainly for rural areas. The main objective of this scheme is to construct pucca and habitable housing for the people living below the poverty line, backward classes, landless agricultural labourers, etc. in rural areas. This scheme has been adopted mainly as part of the commitment to provide housing for all by 2022. The various notable aspects of this scheme are -
(i) Indira Gandhi Awas Yojana provides subsidized loans for the construction of pucca houses for those living in mud houses as well as for the construction of project housing or houses.
(ii) People living in rural areas of India except Delhi and Chandigarh can get the benefits of Indira Gandhi Awas Yojana.
(iii) Indira Awas Yojana was launched in 1985 by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Later, it started functioning as an independent scheme from 1996 and in 2016 it was known as Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
(iv) In the case of SC / ST people living below the poverty line (BPL), there is a provision for providing 60% of the money for the construction of houses. The remaining 40% of the money is spent on the BPL people who are not SC / ST.
(v) There is also a provision for allocating 4% of the money for the mentally challenged and 15% for the physically challenged.
(vi) In order for the BPL people to get the benefits of this scheme, they have to be approved by the Gram Sabha.
(vii) Indira Gandhi Awas Yojana is a joint scheme of the Central and State Governments and the ratio of Central and State Governments is 75:25.
(viii) Currently, the Indira Gandhi Housing Scheme is known as the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
