Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme or MGNREGS was launched in 2006. The most common name of this scheme is 100 Days Work Scheme.
MGNREGS Aims and Objectives, Planning, Implementation, Infrastructure, Features and Other Aspects:-
1. The main objective of this scheme was to provide 100 days of work per year to every willing family whose adult members are willing to earn income through unskilled manual labour.
2. Another important objective of the project was to strengthen the foundations of opportunities required for the livelihood of the poor people by creating permanent assets in rural areas.
3. Another objective of the project was to ensure employment to any person of 18 years of age or above living in rural areas if he has a job card.
4. Any registered adult member of the family can apply for work to the Gram Panchayat on a white paper or in the prescribed form. The work for which he applies should be for a period of 14 consecutive days.
5. Women will be given priority in providing work so that at least one-third of the beneficiaries who have registered their names and applied for work are women.
6. If any disabled person in the village applies for work, he should be placed in the most suitable job possible.
7. He should be provided with work within a radius of five km from the residence of the applicant. If it is not possible to provide work within this area, he should be provided with work at least within the block.
8. The work will be for a minimum of 14 days and not more than 6 days a week.
9. The work will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.
10. The Gram Panchayat will inform the Programme Officer about the allocation of work.
11. Applicants will have to record information regularly in the job card.
12. Each implementing agency including Gram Panchayat will submit monthly reports to the Program Officer.
13. Gram Panchayat will collect information on work per house and record it in the Registration Cum Employment Register.
14. If an applicant does not get work within 15 days of applying - then he will be considered eligible for unemployment allowance.
