Definition and features of community.
Concept / definition of community:-
Humans are social beings. When people live in a social group in a particular area, a deep sense of unity and a homogeneous mentality develop among them. In this way, a social relationship is created between them in various areas such as life, thought, culture, etc. The human community that develops in that particular area is called a community.
Charles Horton Cooley has called a community a permanent social group. Within this social group, people fulfill all their needs.
Kingsley Davis has called a community a self-sufficient regional group. All the members of this group fulfill their objectives through the community.
MacIver says, a community is a social group in which all the members living in it live a life with homogeneous characteristics and establish social relations with each other.
Therefore, it can be said that a community is a social group in which the members living in it live in a specific area, hold and carry homogeneous ideals and culture, a deep ''we'' sense is created among them - that is called a community.
Features / Characteristics of a community:-
The various characteristics of a community are as follows -
1. Specific area:-
A necessary condition for a community is a specific region or area. The members of a specific community live in a specific geographical area. A deep sense of unity develops among the members by living in a specific area for a long time. A community living in a particular region has a similar and ideal relationship in various areas such as clothing, food habits, culture, education, lifestyle, economic activities, political life, etc. However, there are exceptions to this. For example, although nomadic people are called communities, they do not always live in a particular region.
2. We Feeling: -
Each person plays his or her own role in society as a member of a particular community. Every person, every group and institution in society is mutually reactive and dependent on each other. By playing this specific social role, a deep kinship is developed between the members. This is called we-feeling. The we-feeling of the members is the main foundation of the community.
3. Purpose: -
A community is not formed with any specific purpose. Its purpose is multiple and multifaceted. Since all members of a community fulfill all their needs within the community, the purpose of the community is multifaceted.
4. Natural social organization: -
A community is not born artificially based on specific needs. A community is born naturally. A community is naturally formed as a result of human beings living in a particular geographical area for a long time.
5. Unplanned: -
People develop various institutions in a planned manner within the community; but it is not possible to develop a community in a planned manner. In reality, it is not possible for people to develop a community. A community is formed unplanned when people live together in a particular area.
6. Similarity in the lifestyle of members: -
Similarity can be observed in many areas in the lifestyle of the members of the community. All members of the community share the same lifestyle, ideals, sense of life, etc. This similarity creates a deep sense of unity among the members of the community.
7. Legal context: -
The community has no legal basis. That is, individuals living in the community cannot file any case against the community. Therefore, in the eyes of the law, the community has no recognition, rights, duties, responsibilities, etc.
8. Scope: -
The community can be small or large. The scope of the community can be different in different geographical contexts. Again, the existence of many small communities can also be observed within a large community. For example, the community of a district includes many villages.
9. Name and identity: -
Each community has a specific name and identity. It is by this name that individuals are considered to belong to a specific community. Again, the identity of the person, location, etc., becomes easily understandable on the basis of the specific name of the community.
10. Permanent nature:-
Communities are fairly long-lasting. Permanence is an important characteristic of a community. The residence of people living in a particular area for a long time forms a community.
