Educational guidance provides guidance keeping in mind the needs, abilities and capabilities of the students at each level of education. Generally, the levels of education can be divided into several parts - primary level, secondary level and higher secondary level. Educational guidance provides important guidance at each level of education and helps in achieving the ultimate goal of education. The functions of educational guidance at different levels of education are -
(A) Functions of educational guidance at primary level:-
The primary level of education is considered from class one to class eight and from 6+ years to 13+ years. Within this, lower primary level is from class one to class four or five and upper primary level is from class five or six to class eight. The functions of educational guidance at the entire primary level are -
(i) To initiate the right education of each student.
(ii) To develop the interest of students towards education.
(iii) Conducting necessary programs for motivational development among each student.
(iv) Effectively introducing the student to the primary level curriculum.
(v) Various education plans are adopted to make primary education successful. Introducing the student to this education plan and encouraging him to participate in it effectively.
(vi) Identifying and solving all the problems that students face during the education process.
(vii) Identifying weak and backward students and taking special measures for them.
(viii) Properly managing the student's rebellious behavior and turning the protests into positive ones and solving the rebellious problems among the students.
(ix) Helping the student in adapting to each subject of education.
(x) Identifying the causes of school skipping or drop-out problems and solving them.
(xi) Making students suitable for the next level of education.
(xii) Providing completeness to the objectives of education by conducting appropriate co-curricular activities.
(B) Functions of Educational Guidance at Secondary Level:-
Class IX and X are called the secondary education level. This level of education is very important in the life of every student. Usually, it is during this level of education that students reach puberty, due to which huge changes occur in the physical and mental aspects and on the other hand, future life and vocational needs are fully developed from this level. The functions of educational guidance at the secondary level are -
(i) To make students aware of the objectives of secondary education.
(ii) To collect and analyze information about students and preserve it for future needs.
(iii) To present vocational subjects to the students and to develop the students' knowledge about the relationship between education and vocational.
(iv) To guide the students properly in the field of socialization. To develop the students as ideal citizens of the future through appropriate socialization.
(v) To help students choose courses according to their interests, abilities and qualifications. Appropriate courses help in the development according to the students' motivation.
(vi) To introduce the different courses and their relationship with the profession to the students and to adapt them.
(vii) To identify the weaknesses of the weak and backward students and to adopt special or alternative education plans for them.
(viii) To manage the provocative behavior among the students in an appropriate way.
(ix) To adopt the necessary plans for the development of motivational behavior among the students.
(x) To introduce the various problems of puberty and their solutions to the students and to guide them towards the right behavior. To arrange sex education if necessary.
(xi) To adopt appropriate plans so that the students can acquire the qualifications for suitable professions in their future lives. Also, to familiarize the students with the professional world in general.
(xii) To introduce the various aspects and opportunities of higher education to the students - so that the students can be informed about higher education.
(C) Functions of Educational Guidance at Higher Secondary Level:-
Eleventh and twelfth - These two classes are called higher secondary level. This level is very important for future life. Specialization of the curriculum starts from this level. Therefore, choosing the appropriate curriculum at this level is essential for success in future life. The functions of educational guidance at higher secondary level are -
(i) To make the issue of curriculum division clear to the student. Any ambiguity in this regard has a deep negative impact on the student's life. Therefore, educational guidance has to be very careful in this regard.
(ii) To help the student in choosing the curriculum. A suitable curriculum can fulfill the life of the student and can fulfill the objectives of education in general. Therefore, educational guidance helps the student in choosing the curriculum by providing information about different types of curricula.
(iii) To expose the different aspects of vocational education to the student. Providing information about different courses, institutions, opportunities - facilities - etc. is one of the functions of educational guidance.
(iv) To present various government schemes and facilities in the vocational field to the students.
(v) To provide an idea about higher education. To make the students aware about various courses, institutions of higher education, etc.
(vi) To make the students aware about various vocational and professional courses - such as - medicine, engineering, polytechnic, journalism, teaching - etc.
(vii) To adopt specific plans so that the students can adapt properly in the field of higher education.
(viii) Many students are deprived of traditional higher education due to various reasons. Therefore, to provide information to the students about distance education, open education - etc.
(ix) To adopt special plans for weak and backward students.
(x) To inform the students about their weaknesses and to guide them appropriately to overcome those weaknesses.
(xi) To make the students fit for future life. This basically has two aspects - the vocational field and the field of higher education. In both cases, the main task of educational guidance is to ensure the ideal orientation of the student.
