Stage Preparation :-
The stage has to be prepared in such a way that the audience thinks it is a railway bogie. For this, the sound of the train must be added in the background. The sound from the backstage of the train will diminish when the characters speak; and when they are silent, the sound in the background will be loud. The role of focus of light is very important in this play. So we have to arrange focus light in order to make it realistic for the audience to have a railway bogie on the stage, the focus of the light should be on the characters only, without the use of bright lights throughout the stage.
The stage curtain rose. The sound of the train slowly stopping in the background. Then that sound will stop. The spectators realized that the train had stopped completely. A male passenger was sitting in his seat. After the train stopped, he left his seat and got up. Then begins his short conversation with the audience.
The male passenger : Hi, I’m travelling here by this train . You know , I’m completely blind. I always wander aimlessly like this. And I also play a game with it. The game is that I don't let anyone understand that I'm blind. Needless to say, I always win this game. I have become quite efficient day by day. This is how light enters my dark world. Anyway, let's sit down.
[ Saying this, the male passenger took his seat again. ]
[ Then a girl entered the stage with only one piece of luggage. At this point, some people start talking to the girl from behind the scenes. They talk from behind the scenes and the girl talks to them from the stage. ]
Background ( Male ) : We are very anxious about your comfort in the train. You are going alone …….
The girl : It’s ok , I can take care of myself . Don’t worry .
Background ( Female ) : Keep the bag close at hand all the time and don’t lean out the window. And always remember don't talk to strangers.
The girl : Oh mother ! I am a grown up girl . Don’t worry so much . ( The train began to whistle ) Ok , good bye .
Background ( Both male and female ) : Good bye ……. Good bye ……
[ The girl waved her one hand towards them . Then she moved to his seat. The sound of running trains from the background has already started. ]
The male passenger : Are you going all the way to Dehra ?
The girl : Who ?
The male passenger : I didn’t see you either , but I heard you come in .
The girl : I’m getting off at Saharanpur . My aunt is meeting me there.
The male passenger : Then I had better not get too familiar .
The girl : Why are you saying that ?
The male passenger ( laughing ) : You know , aunts are usually formidable creatures .
[ The girl started laughing .]
The girl : Where are you going ?
The male passenger : To Dehra , and then to Mussoorie .
The girl ( excited ) : Oh , how lucky you are ! I wish I were going to Mussoorie . I love the hills , especially in October .
The male passenger : Yes , this is the best time. ( A little pause ) In October , the hills are covered with wild dahlias , the sun is delicious , and at night you can sit in front of a logfire and drink a little brandy . Most of the tourists have gone , and the roads are quiet and almost deserted. Yes , October is the best time .
[ A little pause . ]
What is it like outside ?
[ As soon as he says this, he will act or gesture in such a way that it will seem that he has made a mistake .]
The girl : Why don't you look out of the window ?
[ After hearing this word from the girl , the male passenger should be relieved - such an act or gesture should be done. ]
The male passenger : I can tell with my eyes closed what is seen now through the window. I could see telegraph posts flashing by ……….. Have you noticed that the trees seem to be moving while we seem to be standing still ?
The girl : That always happens , ………………… do you see any animals ?
The male passenger : No ……….. I still closed my eyes but I can tell you that there is no animal outside there . I know that there were hardly any animals left in the forests near Dehra …
The girl : Wow , you have a very powerful inward eye.
The male passenger : But you have an interesting face .
( The girl started laughing pleasantly )
The girl : It’s nice to be told I have an interesting face . I’m tired of people telling me that I have a pretty face.
The male passenger ( after a little thought ) : Well , an interesting face can also be pretty .
The girl : You are a gallant young man ,.............. But why are you so serious ?
[ A little pause ]
The male passenger : We’ll soon be at your station .
The girl : Thank goodness it’s a short journey . I can’t bear to sit in a train for more than two or three hours.
[ A long pause . Only the background sound of the running train is heard . And then the carriage wheels changed their sound and rhythm , and the girl got up and collected her luggage. She is standing very close to the male passenger and the male passenger is feeling her presence. At one time , the background sound stopped . ]
The girl : Goodbye [ and then she moved ]
[ At this time some special words have to be presented in the background. There will be the shouts of the coolies, the shouts of the hawkers. And a shout can be heard so that it seems as if someone has hit someone and is arguing about that. After that , one is heard saying -
‘’Oh well well, I did not understand, forgive me.’’
After hearing it , the train's whistle blew and the sound of a running train was heard again . A new passenger entered the stage .He sat right in front of the male passenger. ]
The new passenger : You must be disappointed !
The male passenger : Why are you saying that?
The new passenger ( Laughing ) : You must be disappointed . I’m not nearly as attractive a travelling companion as the one who just left .
The male passenger : She was an interesting girl .
The new passenger : I think so .
The male passenger : Can you tell me - did she keep her hair long or short ?
The new passenger : I don’t remember …………… It was her eyes I noticed , not her hair .
The male passenger : Why ? Anything special ?
The new passenger : She had beautiful eyes - but they were of no use to her . She was completely blind . Didn’t you notice ?
[ The male passenger sat bewildered and speechless . Only the terrifying roar of the train can be heard from the background. Slowly the curtain came down. ]
