Definition of physical education: 

Physical education refers to the regular instruction in physical exercise, sports and hygiene. The term physical education is commonly associated with school and college education. Through this education a student is trained about his health, mind and healthy body. A student as well as every person should practice physical education regularly if they want to have a healthy body and a healthy mind.

In general, we get tired after working hard all day in a busy life. So physical education is the only good option to keep the mind and body fresh. The education given from childhood to keep our body and mind healthy is called physical education. Physical education refers to activities like sports, yoga, workout, pranayama and meditation. Just as every education is important in life, so is physical education. Physical education keeps the body fit and healthy. This education is needed from childhood.


The education that improves the whole person through physical activities is called physical education. The goal of education is as similar as the goal of physical education. But with the evolution of human civilization, the goal of education has changed, so physical education has also changed. Various physiologists have given the definition of physical education. The definitions are-

J. R. Sharman: While defining physical education Sharman rightly says that – “Physical education is that part of education which is organized through physical activity and thereby develops the behavior of the individual.”

J. P. Thomas: According to Thomas, “Physical education is the part of general education which develops the personality of a child and perfects his body, mind and soul through physical activity.”

J. B. Nash: According to Nash, “Physical education is that part of the whole education that deals with the movement of the large muscles.”

J. F. Williams: According to Williams, “Physical education is the sum total of well-chosen physical activities of human beings directed towards an objective goal.”

C. A. Bucher: While defining physical education, Bucher says, “Physical education is an integral part of the whole system of education and its efforts are specially selected. Physical activity makes a person physically, mentally, emotionally and socially a fit citizen.”

Objectives of physical education

Different people have given different opinions about the purpose of physical education. A review of the motives of various individuals reveals four main motives:

(1) Objectives of physical development: By participating in physical education programs, the individual becomes invigorated, skill is enhanced and he becomes healthy by increasing the efficiency of his bodily organs and systems.

(2) Objectives of Kinetic Development: Objectives of Kinetic Development are – Development of physical awareness through participation in physical education activities, requires less energy expenditure, efficient, flawless and artistic movement of the child.

(3) Purpose of mental development: The purpose of mental development is to mean- physical development through participation in physical education activities, improvement of practical behavior, expansion of knowledge, development of personality, giving up bad habits, formation of cooperative attitude, and practical change through the development of various human qualities.

(4) Objectives of Social Development: Objectives of social development are individual understanding, group understanding, establishing oneself as a member of society. Physical education programs ensure the development of the best social qualities in the individual and make the individual a good citizen.



Need of Physical Education :

Regular physical exercise and physical education are essential to keep the body healthy, strong and functional. 

1. By participating in various programs of physical education, good habits such as eating and drinking on time, rest, sleep, exercise, etc. are developed, which are essential in every person's life.

2. Civic qualities like empathy, courtesy, brotherhood, solidarity, values ​​etc. are awakened in the child by participating in various physical activities. Which helps in personality development and building a prosperous society.

3. Need of physical education for development of character qualities of the individual. Discipline, self-control, honesty, self-confidence etc. are developed through physical activities.

4. Know about physiology, safety, education, health science, nutrition, first aid, drug side effects, etc., which are very useful in personal life.

5. The role of physical education is very important in creating national unity. It is easier to maintain national unity by carrying out various programs of physical education.

Importance Of Physical Education

We know that our beautiful body is a very beautiful gift from God. So we should maintain this beauty. Protecting it is our biggest responsibility. And the action we take to keep the body healthy is physical education. But nowadays in busy life people are running all day long. In the urge to earn money, people are forgetting to take care of themselves. As money is a part of our life, so our body is the most important part of us. So one should not be indifferent to him.

We read and wrote in childhood that health is wealth. If our body is not healthy, we cannot reach the heights of success in any field. Physical education develops mental strength, improves beauty and prevents diseases.

If we do not understand the importance of physical education or do not have proper knowledge about it then we cannot take proper care of the body. Due to which the body will not be able to stay healthy.

Along with the digestive power, immunity starts to decline with age. And the chances of getting various diseases increases. In such situations we should do physical exercises and yoga. So physical education is very important for children. Physical education can create a strong body and a calm mind. Now every country has adopted yoga and pranayama since childhood.

Importance of Physical Education in Students Life

From school life, the importance of physical education is taught to the students and physical education is taught in the school. Because this education gives special importance to students. The importance of physical education in student life is-
(a) Regular exercise trains the mind.
(b) Physical education builds the body and expands the mind.
(c ) School sports teach students a good moral quality.
(d) A great source of joy for children is physical education.
(e) Physical education creates mental focus in children's learning.
(f) Physical education creates a healthy appearance.

Value of physical education

Physical education is a good resource for both body and mind. After studying at school, students usually feel depressed, then outdoor sports in the afternoon make children breathe fresh air and strengthen. These sports provide unrestricted energy to all parts of the body. Hence their health improves.
