Difference between formal education and non-formal education:-
1. Difference in terms of control:-
Formal education is completely controlled. Strict control is seen in all areas of curriculum, teaching, evaluation, etc. But although non-formal education is controlled, it is not strictly controlled like controlled education. In non-formal education, the student gets enough freedom in all areas of curriculum selection, participation in learning, evaluation, etc.
2. Difference in terms of the role of the teacher:-
Formal education is largely conducted by qualified teachers. In the case of teaching and learning in the classroom, the student is completely dependent on the teacher. In this case, the teacher plays the role of a bridge between the curriculum and the student. But in non-formal education, the role of the teacher is negligible. In this case, the student has to learn by himself.
3. Difference in curriculum:-
In formal education, students do not have such freedom in choosing the curriculum. Students have to follow a pre-planned curriculum mechanically. But in non-formal education, students enjoy considerable freedom in choosing the curriculum. In non-formal education, students can choose the curriculum of their choice from a variety of different curricula.
4. Difference in evaluation:-
In formal education, evaluation is conducted in a disciplined and strict manner. Students are forced to participate in the predetermined evaluation process. But in non-formal education, students can participate in the evaluation process by dividing the curriculum into different parts as per their convenience.
5. Difference in age limit:-
In formal education, the age limit is fixed in advance. A specific age is required for a specific class. But in non-formal education, there is no restriction on the age limit. Students can participate in the education process at any age.
6. Institutional Differences:-
For each center of formal education, there is a specific school building. But there is no separate school building for non-formal education; usually, non-formal education is conducted in formal education institutions.
7. Differences in Financial Matters:-
Formal education is quite expensive. In various areas, teachers, construction of school buildings and infrastructure development, textbooks, etc. are spent on various aspects. But non-formal education is comparatively less expensive. In this case, the educational process is conducted with part-time teachers, no money is spent on construction and management of school buildings. As a result, the cost of non-formal education is quite low.
8. Differences in the number of students:-
In formal education, the number of students is limited. A certain number of students are admitted in each formal educational institution. But any number of students can participate in non-formal education.
9. Structural Differences:-
Formal education is fully organized. In this case, each level of education is related to each other. But non-formal education is not as organized as formal education and in this case, there is no mutual relationship between the levels of education.
10. Difference in teaching method:-
In formal education, teaching is conducted on the basis of interaction between the teacher and the student. The student can directly acquire knowledge about the subject from the teacher and the teacher can get feedback from the students. But in non-formal education, a direct relationship between the teacher and the student is not possible.
11. Organizational difference:-
The main organization of formal education is the school. On the other hand, the two organizations of non-formal education are - distance education and open education.
12. Difference in Objective :-
The main objective of formal education is the all-round development of the student. For this purpose, formal education is conducted with specific goals. But the main objective of non-formal education is to provide opportunities for out-of-school students to receive education, increase opportunities for higher education - etc.
