Differences between growth and development.

Comparison between growth and development.

Differences between growth and development:-

1. Differences in conceptual terms:-
Growth is a purely biological process. Growth is the increase in size and shape physically. On the other hand, development is a biological and intellectual process at the same time. The development of a person occurs through the experience that a person accumulates as he grows physically. As a result of development, the person's ability to perform work increases and excellence in work is created.

2. Differences in time:-
A person grows up to a certain age. After some time after puberty, the growth process gradually decreases and eventually the growth stops completely. On the other hand, development is a lifelong process. The development process takes place from birth to death.

3. Effect of practice:-
Educational psychologists do not agree on whether practice has any effect on growth. However, practice generally does not have any significant effect on growth. But, the direct effect of practice is seen in development. The development of a person is achieved through continuous practice of an intellectual subject.

4. Measurability:-
Growth is the change in height, weight and size. Therefore, all aspects of growth can be easily measured. On the other hand, since development is intellectual development; therefore, development is subject to observation.

5. Naturalness:-
Growth is a natural process. The external and surrounding environment cannot cause any significant difference in growth. But development is the result of the interaction between the person and the environment.

6. Difference in control:-
The growth of a person cannot be controlled in any way. For example, the height of a person, how his skin color will be - these things cannot be controlled in any way. But the development process is completely under the control of humans. The environment in which a person is brought up - the development of the person will happen in the same way.

7. Difference in interdependence:-
Growth is in no way dependent on development. But the development process depends largely on growth. If a person does not grow properly at a certain age, his development is hindered.

8. Quantitative and qualitative:-
Since growth is measurable - so growth is a quantitative matter. But, the development process cannot be measured, it can be observed; therefore, development is a qualitative matter.

9. Difference in influence in the field of education:-
There is a difference of opinion among educational psychologists about the extent of the influence of growth in the field of education. However, the influence of development in the field of education is unquestionable. As the individual develops, his receptive capacity and skills in the field of education are developed. In other words, the development of the individual is accelerated through education.

10. Growth and development rate:-
The growth rate changes with age. For example, the growth rate of a child is highest from birth to two and a half to three years and during puberty. But then the growth rate decreases. But, the development process is continuously organized with growth.
